Youth Basketball Overview

* Rules: Based on standard basketball regulations but are modified for each age division. They are designed to give all players of different skill levels an equal opportunity for success. 

* Behavior: Appropriate behavior must always be shown at all practices and games. Adults are powerful role models and should always display good character in their words and actions. Only positive encouragement should be given and instruction should only be given by the coaches to prevent confusion. 

* Divisions: Based on age: 4-5 years (co-ed), 6-7 years (co-ed), 8-9 years (co-ed), 10-14 beginner/ intermediate girls, 10-11 boys and advanced girls, 12-13 boys and advanced girls, 14-17 boys and advanced girls / Higher skilled players may move up an age division with the sports director’s approval. Players may not move down an age division. Exceptions are made for children with a disability only. 

* Balls: Children are encouraged to bring their own balls; 4-7 year olds use junior balls (27.5), 8-11 year olds and the girl’s division use size 28.5, 12 and older use full size balls. 

* Courts/ Basket height: 4-5 years - basket is at 7 ft and court length is the width of a standard basketball court; 6-7 years - basket is at 8ft and court length is the width of a standard basketball court; 8-11 years – basket is standard height and court length is the width of a standard basketball court; 12 and older play on standard size basket height and court. 

* Team Formation: teams are put together based on a number of factors including age, coach’s availability, player’s available practice days, skill level, placement of different aged siblings on the same practice day, and equal number of players per teams. Because of the difficulties these challenges present and to be fair to everyone, no other requests will be accepted. 

* Gym Rules: Only clear liquids in spill-proof containers are allowed in the gym. No soda, coffee, smoothies, or any other non-clear drinks. Clear drinks must be in closed containers. No open containers or paper cups may be brought in the gym. No food or candy may be brought in the gym.
